Health Matters - ESCAPE-Pain

Dr Paul Bowen, our clinical chair, and GP with McIlvride Medical Practice, Poynton

As a GP, I see many patients whose quality of life has been undermined by long-term conditions that reduce their mobility. Sedentary lifestyles are bad news for general physical and mental wellbeing. And, in certain circumstances, lack of movement can actually worsen the condition in question.

Depending on the condition, medicine, physiotherapy and occupational therapy can all have a role to play in keeping people moving. However, there also some excellent exercise programmes to which people can refer themselves without having to see their GP first.

One such programme is ESCAPE-Pain, a knee and hip class running in Cheshire to improve mobility and reduce pain for people with chronic joint pain and osteoarthritis.
