Do you have knee or hip pain?

Do you have knee or hip pain?
03 December 2018

Do you have knee or hip pain? If yes, join Everybody Leisure’s new programme, ESCAPE-pain in 2019, to help you to manage your joint pain.

ESCAPE-Pain is a funded, six-week, evidence-based rehabilitation programme, sometimes called the ‘knee or hip class’. It is designed to reduce pain and disability for people with chronic joint pain or osteoarthritis.

Classes include the following:

  • Holmes Chapel Community Centre, pre-introduction date: 16 January 2019, course runs: 21 January to 27 February, 1pm – 2.30pm.
  • Macclesfield Leisure Centre, pre-introduction date: 18 January, course runs: 21 January to 1 March, 2pm – 3.30pm.
  • Holmes Chapel Community Centre, pre-introduction date: 24 April, course runs: 29 April to 12 June, 1pm – 2.30pm.
  • Macclesfield Leisure Centre, pre-introduction date: 26 April, course runs: 29 April to 14 June, 2pm - 3.30pm.

Janice, who has just completed the programme, said: I am 71 years old and I have quite an arthritic left hip, which is also causing pain in my left knee. Before I came on this course, I couldn’t get up out of a chair very well. I certainly wasn’t very mobile and I didn’t have very much confidence in my physical abilities at all.

“Since coming on this course, I have very little pain in my left hip, I have almost no pain in my left knee. I can get up out of a chair very well and I have a lot more confidence in my ability to do physical things.

“This class is done in a nice social situation, so we are all in this together. Physically, it’s done me a great deal of good.

“I think if you sit in a chair like I was doing, then you get the attitude that, I have got a really bad hip and knee and there is nothing they can do about it, and I don’t want an operation so I am going to have to sit here.

“Then you come to these classes and start doing bits, and you can do it, and it makes you feel more confident. Even if you can’t do them to a great degree, at least you can do them. Then week by week, you just try a bit harder. It’s an optimistic programme physically and mentally.”

Over the six weeks, participants will receive information, advice and support from Everybody Leisure’s qualified ESCAPE-pain instructors to help better manage chronic joint pain and lead a more active life.

To access the programme, you must be:

  • Aged over 55 years.
  • Have had knee and/or hip pain for at least six months.
  • Inactive, doing less than 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise weekly.
  • Independently mobile and able to carry out regular exercise.
  • Committed to taking part in two classes per week over six weeks and returning for a final session in week 12.
